Where we dived
Ras Za’atar is located at the northern end of the Ras Mohammed peninsula. The site features a steep wall with numerous indentations, overhangs and chimney-like formations. The reef drops into deep water, giving the dive a dramatic feeling even when staying within recreational limits.
The wall is the main attraction, with changing formations and light as you move along it. Keep an eye inside the overhangs and along the deeper sections of the wall, where smaller creatures can hide.

When to visit
The optimal period to dive Ras Za’atar is from March to November, when water temperatures are warm (22°C to 29°C) and visibility is excellent. The mild currents during this time create ideal conditions for drift and reef diving. Early morning dives can offer calmer waters and better light conditions to fully appreciate the reef’s colors.
Meet the Locals
The wall supports coral gardens housing soft corals, black corals and reef fish, while glassfish gather around some of the overhangs. Longnose hawkfish, groupers, moray eels and other smaller reef species can be found among the formations. Schools of butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, and sweetlips. Occasional sightings of eagle rays and schooling barracudas. Fans of macro photography will be delighted by nudibranchs, cleaner shrimps, and small reef critters often found around pinnacles.
