Dive Site

Plymouth Breakwater is a long stone breakwater protecting Plymouth Sound and is one of the area's regularly dived sites. The sheltered position makes it a useful option when conditions outside the Sound are less favourable. Depending on the conditions, dives can be made on different sides of the breakwater, with very different underwater scenery.

The sheltered side has a more sandy character, while the more exposed side offers rocky terrain and kelp. The site is not particularly deep, making it useful for training and relaxed exploration. Boat traffic is something to keep in mind, so a surface marker buoy is essential when appropriate.

Meet the Locals

Wildlife

The sheltered seabed provides habitat for spider crabs, scallops and small-spotted catsharks, while the rocky areas and kelp support a wider variety of marine life. Look closely around the rocks for smaller crustaceans, fish and other creatures typical of the south-west English coast.
