Dive site

The SS Thistlegorm, a British WWII supply ship, is one of the most legendary wreck dives in the world. Sunk in 1941 by German bombers, it lies at the bottom of the Red Sea near Sha’ab Ali, northwest of Ras Mohammed National Park. Today, it serves as a powerful underwater museum and artificial reef, drawing divers from around the globe to explore its preserved military cargo, dramatic history, and thriving marine life.

What to expect

Best time to dive

JANFEBMARAPRMAYJUNJULAUGSEPOCTNOVDEC
The SS Thistlegorm can be dived year-round, but the best conditions are between April and October when sea temperatures (26°C–30°C) and visibility peak. Early morning or night dives are often preferred to avoid heavy boat traffic, as this is one of the busiest dive sites in Egypt. Divers are advised to follow their dive guides closely, especially during penetration dives, and monitor no-deco limits carefully.

WILDLIFE ... or meet the locals

The wreck has become an artificial reef supporting a rich ecosystem and offering photo opportunities both inside and outside the ship. The wreck is not only historically rich but biologically vibrant:

Pelagic Fish: Giant trevallies, snappers, and jacks patrol the wreck

Reef Fish: Batfish, angelfish, and anthias thrive around the superstructure

Macro Life: Nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, and shrimps in nooks and crannies

Other: Moray eels, scorpionfish, crocodilefish, and barracudas are common

Occasional Sightings: Reef sharks and turtles
